Made By/Mkt by: Direct from the looms of Risam Handlooms and Handicrafts, run by Dipa Agarwalla in West Bengal. Dipa provides much needed grassroots level employment and fair wages to artisans in rural West Bengal and female artisans in Calcutta for whom this is a means of livelihood. She trains and employs them to do finishing and detailing on handwoven articles. We are pleased to work directly with her and amplify her important initiative by creating and expanding marketplace opportunities for her enterprise. We have a highly curated collection of sarees, stoles and scarves in finest muslin and jamdani work.

Jamdani Muslin: The highly skilled craftsmen of Bengal weave magic by their hands called Jamdani muslin which is an intricate design made using hands on the weaving loom using high counts of yarn 100 or above. Only the most skilled artisan can weave with such high counts of fine yarn. It is considered as one of the most time consuming and laborious work. It is a supplementary weft technique of weaving, where the artistic motifs are produced by a non-structural weft. The standard weft (base fabric) is a fine extra long staple fibre( muslin of 100 and above thread count) and sheer fabric, while the supplementary weft with thicker threads adds the intricate patterns. Each supplementary weft motif is added separately by hand while weaving on the loom. Jamdani has been declared an ‘Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity’ by UNESCO. Jamdani muslin fabric is expensive due to its laborious work which requires a lot of patience, skill and effort while making these textiles. As consumers it is important to understand the difference and support the skills of artisans still working in this beautiful but painstaking technique.
